2022 was jam packed with all sorts of fun and excitement, important steps to grow the sport of curling, and efforts to help keep kids active and having fun across Canada. As the new year approaches, we’re taking a moment to reflect and look back at some of our favourite parts of 2022.
It was just under 14 years ago that Egg Farmers Rocks & Rings presented by Curling Canada first entered schools across the country. As of this year, over 2 million students have been reached by our programs through instruction, equipment rentals, and virtual education resources. This past summer, we were excited to announce that Canadian egg farmers exetended their support of the Rocks & Rings program through to 2026. This extension will mark 10 years of title sponsorship of Egg Farmers Rocks & Rings presented by Curling Canada.
Through the help of the Curling Canada Grassroots Youth Funding Grant, the Bobcaygeon Curling Club and Egg Farmers Rocks & Rings presented by Curling Canada worked together to run a live virtual session of Rocks & Rings for the students of Bobcaygeon Public School. The session included interactive games all centered around the sport of curling and also incorporates some provincial school curriculum. This session also had a surprise visit from Paralympic Wheelchair Curler, Jon Thurston. Students enjoyed learning about curling and wheelchair curling and hearing about Jon’s path to becoming a Paralympian. This session marked the first of several Live Virtual classes hosted by Rocks & Rings which included special visits from athletes like Ryan Fry and Mark Ideson.
Back in February during TSN’s Curling Day In Canada broadcast, a class of students in Alberta were featured as they experienced the Egg Farmers Rocks & Rings presented by Curling Canada programs – in their school gym, and in their classroom using our online education resources. They also got a surprise message from a very special guest: Olympic Bronze Medalist, Geoff Walker.
It has always been a major goal of the Rocks & Rings program to find ways to introduce more kids to curling by reaching a greater and more diverse audience from coast to coast. The challenge of reaching this goal has been overcome little by little over the years, most recently with the introduction of our Rental program and “In The Classroom”, our curling-themed online education portal, which has allowed us to reach some of even the most remote Canadian communities. There has been no greater example of this reach than our recent visit to three schools in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
With the year behind us and a brand new year just around the corner, we look ahead to many exciting things coming up in 2023. Stay tuned for big announcements coming soon!
