For most people, summer means camping, beach trips, and lots of time in the sun. For Rocks & Rings instructors, summer means curling! Instructor Anneka is spending her summer sharing curling with summer camps across the Greater Toronto Area and we wanted to highlight her story.
Our popular school program is perfectly suited for summer camps, giving campers an engaging and interactive camp activity. Perfect for sports camps, winter themed days, Olympic activities, and for every camp in between, Rocks & Rings gets youth active and having fun.
Now, let’s meet Anneka and learn more about her experience as a Rocks & Rings instructor.
Anneka’s favourite moment as an instructor was when the group really got into the game, grabbing brooms and sweeping stones for their teammates. It was just like the curling they had seen on TV! Anneka loved seeing all the kids having fun while getting an in-depth curling education.
We asked Anneka why it was fun to share a winter sport like curling with youth in the summer “For me, sharing the sport in the summer to youth reminds me how much I love curling and gives me a chance to continue sharing my knowledge and love of the game all year round, and hopefully when curling season comes around again, we’ll see some new faces of kids that tried it over the summer and want to try it on ice!” Introducing students to curling in the summer gives them the opportunity to sign up at their local curling club as soon as the ice comes in!
Anneka thinks it’s important to teach youth the sport of curling to ensure that kids can find an activity that’s right for them. “Curling is a great sport because you can play it at any age, any ability, and any level – it’s very versatile and it’s important for people to see that. Teaching new sports in general to youth gives them more options whether it’s now or later in their lives – they’ve tried it, they know it exists, and hopefully one day they’ll come back to it.”
Anneka loves being a Rocks & Rings instructor because she gets to see kids of all ages having fun playing a sport. Being an instructor combines two of Anneka’s passions, teaching and curling!
It wouldn’t be an Instructor Highlight if we didn’t ask Anneka what her favourite egg dish was (as a shoutout to our Egg Farmer sponsors!). Anneka loves Eggs Benedict and a simple Eggs Over Easy with toast and bacon. Her tip is to dip the bacon and toast in the runny yolks for a great and delicious breakfast.
